Cliff Olin

I have owned and operated 5 small businesses since my graduation from college in 1986. This real world experience, and a personal tragedy, has led me to create Olin Capital Advisors and direct its concentration in the Exit Planning and Mergers & Acquisitions fields.

My parents had owned a small business since 1984 and were happily living the American Dream of business ownership. The business offered them a comfortable lifestyle but, much of its success was predicated on my father’s participation in the venture. Tragedy struck when Dad, Roger (age 57), was diagnosed with Mesothelioma, a terminal form of asbestos cancer. Within 8 months he had passed away. Unfortunately, there had been no exit planning for the business. I witnessed, first hand, the affect this lack of planning had on my parent’s business. That experience continues to feed my desire to help owners properly prepare for the successful exit or transition out of their business and continues to shape my outlook on life today.

I like to learn by life experience and formal education, as evidenced by going back to school to attain my master’s degree in Business Administration at the age of 47. I have also come to believe that life is short and can be even shorter for an unlucky few, like my Dad. I believe in “Family First” as any of my employees will attest, and keeping a good Life-Work balance. I also believe that life is too short to work at something you do not like. I believe you get out of life what you put into it and your attitude is an incredibly important factor in determining your level of personal happiness. I also believe too few people take full responsibility for their actions and this is a source of great concern for me.

Finally, it may sound trite but, “My Word is My Bond”…..that‘s something my Father taught me and words I try to live by.
